Lesotho Travel and Backpacking Guide

Sani Pass, Lesotho

Lesotho, often referred to as the Kingdom in the Sky, is a mountainous country surrounded by South Africa. Links with its neighbour are very close but it has always maintained a staunchly independent identity. It boasts the highest low point of any country in the world and its mountain scenery, comprising the Drakensburg and Maluti mountains make it one of the most spectacular regions in southern Africa.

For the avid traveller the scope for travel throughout the region is extraordinary when one considers the stunning scenery of the Cape, the Garden Route, the many game parks and the semitropical coast of the north east. Countries neighbouring South Africa are easily accessible and journeys through the desert of the Kalahari, the Okavango Delta, the Skeleton Coast, the Zambezi, Victoria Falls and much much more, are regular holiday destinations for our volunteers.

Lesotho is a poor country where the majority of the people rely on subsistence agriculture. The just completed Highlands Water Project, a series of dams on the Orange river are a potential boost to the economy in that Lesotho is now self sufficient in terms of electricity production and is able to sell electricity and water to RSA.

For those sun lovers amongst you it is certainly warm in the summer, but don’t be deceived, temperatures can plummet to -10C in winter and snow is not uncommon.

Getting to & Around Lesotho

Lesotho isn’t the easiest country to get to, or get around. We recommend flying to South Africa and then booking a tour to discover the main locations.
