The Danube is one of Europe’s great rivers, and has the distinction of being the continent’s second longest waterway. It is also classified as an international water waterway, and crosses numerous countries throughout central and Eastern Europe.

Originating in Germany, the Danube runs through four of the region’s most historically important capital cities, before finally emptying into the Black Sea in the South East. It is home to some wonderful scenery and unusual wildlife, and offers the potential of adventure for any international traveller.

So which cities dominate the shores of the Danube and provide the most thrilling experience for international visitors? Consider the following.

1. Vienna, Austria

Vienna, Danube

Vienna remains one of Europe’s most picturesque capital cities, fusing traditional architecture and modern design principles with breathtaking ease. Featuring spectacular buildings such as the Schönbrunn Palace and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna is a cultural haven that should appeal to anyone with a love of art, history and scenic beauty.

Danube river cruises offer a fascinating insight into Vienna’s past and future, while also allowing you to sample the delights of Europe’s most romantic river.

2. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest

Budapest is the capital of Hungary, and it stands as the largest city in Eastern Europe. It is also renowned as one of the region’s most beautiful locations, with a host of World Heritage Sites including the Buda Castle Quarter, the Millennium Underground Railway and the banks of the Danube itself.

Once again, Budapest is a fulcrum of culture and artistic relevance, while its natural landscape provides a stunning backdrop for your visit.

3. Passau, Germany

The most lesser-known destination on my list, be honest, have you ever heard of it?

Passau is a town in Lower Bavaria, Germany and it is otherwise known as the “City of Three Rivers,” because the Danube joins by the Inn from the south, and the Ilz from the north.

You can have the holiday of a lifetime exploring the Baroque and Gothic architecture, the beautiful mountain crest, and sit back and enjoy the many jazz and cabaret shows Passau offers. St Stephen’s Cathedral is a must-see as it holds the second largest church pipe organ in the world.
