However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t mix it up a bit. Dinner doesn’t need to be boring, and there are so many unique and incredible places to eat.

Check out my list of the most unusual and amazing restaurants that will leave you speechless.

1. Ithaa Restaurant, Maldives

The world’s first undersea restaurant, Ithaa is located 5 meters below sea level in the Maldives (as pictured above). As you can imagine, the experiences comes complete with a view it would be hard to top. Expect panoramic underwater views of coral and brightly coloured fish, all with a luxurious selection of options on the menu.

2. Waterfall Restaurant, The Philippines

Waterfall Restaurant, The Philippines

Have you ever seen a restaurant like this? No, I didn’t think so. This restaurant is located in the heart of the tropics at the Villa Escudero Resort in The Philippines. It sits right smack at the bottom of a huge waterfall where clear spring water literally washes over your feet whilst dining. Perfect for delicious local dishes with a beautiful backdrop.

The Rock Restaurant is an essential place to visit on any trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar. Located just off the beautiful Michanwi Pingwe beach in the Indian Ocean, The Rock Restaurant is a totally unique location and unlike anywhere else on our list. Eating here is a really extraordinary experience, and the food is highly rated too.

4. Dinner In The Sky, Brussels, Belgium

Dinner In The Sky, Brussels, Belgium

This could be one of the most exhilarating meals of your life, unless you’re scared of heights of course… Dinner in the sky is exactly what it sounds like, one dining table full of people, strapped in and hoisted up by a crane 50 meters into the sky, table and waiters an’ all.

5. El Diablo, Spain

El Diablo, Spain

A volcanic hole is used to prepare the food at this restaurant, so not exactly standard cooking proceedure. A grill is placed over the opening of a giant hole, where 6 feet below bubbling lava rests at 400 degrees. Don’t worry, it maybe a weird dining experience, but it’s not dangerous, the volcano has been dormant since 1824!

6. Yellow Tree House Café, Auckland, New Zealand

Yellow Tree House Café, Auckland

The Yellow Tree House restaurant is cocoon shaped and built around a 40 meter high redwood tree. You’ll access your table via an elevated path high into the canopy. At night, the restaurant and pathway leading to it, light up, making it all very romantic. Ahhhhhh.

7. Cabbages And Condoms, Bangkok, Thailand

Cabbages And Condoms, Bangkok, Thailand

Devour some classic Thai dishes all under the carefully placed decor of, errrr, condoms. The restaurant is decorated with condoms from all over the world, and instead of mints after your meal you are given condoms. It’s not all a gimmick though, the concept goes a bit deeper than that, as all proceeds go towards local sex education and AIDS prevention organisations.

8. Modern Toilet, Taipei, Taiwan

Modern Toilet, Taipei, Taiwan

Modern Toilet is a bathroom themed chain which is based in Taipei, Taiwan. The restaurant decor is based on items from your bathroom. You’ll sit on actual toilet seats while taking a bite out of your bathtub formed dish. There’s not denying its an, erm, ‘unique’ dining experience.

9. Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant, Dani Beach, Kenya

Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant, Dani Beach, Kenya

This restaurant is a must do if you are in Dani, the small restaurant is hosted in a limestone and coral cave which gets illuminated by tiny hidden lights all along the wall. The open air restaurant is right on the beach front too – what else could you ask for?

10. Lainiao Snow Village, Lapland, Finland

Lainiao Snow Village, Lapland, Finland

In Lapland above the Arctic Circle lays a true gem, a restaurant made entirely of ice. Though cold, this experience is definitely one of a kind. The venue is kept between -2 and -5 degrees Celsius at all times, so can enjoy some authentic Lapland cuisine, but be sure not to forget the vodka (purely to keep you warm in the chilly setting of course!)

11. Cat Cafe MOCHA Harajuku, Tokyo, Japan

Cat Cafe MOCHA Harajuku, Tokyo, Japan

Not a cat person? Then I’d carry on to the next suggestion if I were you. Cat Cafe MOCHA Harajuku is situated in central Tokyo and was designed for cat lovers; the concept is built on the idea that visitors enjoy sipping their lattés while snuggling up next to a friendly cat for company. Once you arrive you are free to order your own food or drinks and go and stoke the cats.
